Entrevaux

is located on the side of the road D 4202, around 70 km from Nice and approximately 40 km from Castellane. The medieval city was founded in the 11th century on a rocky hillside in the bend of the river Var.

Two famous French engineers, first Niquet and than Vauban, strengthened the medieval fortifications (Entrevaux once stood on the border between France and Savoy). Their work is very well preserved and can bee seen today.

Entrevaux may be reached by the mountain train from Nice to Digne-les-Bains (Train touristique des pignes). In summer, a restored 19th century steam train runs between Annot and Puget-Théniers.
