Arles

Arles is placed in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, on the river Rhône. Town with over 2000 years of history is filled with evidences of its long existence. The Roman and Romanesque monuments of Arles are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Arles is also famous thanks to Vincent van Gogh. Artist painted there many of his leading works, astonished by the local light. Motives of his paintings are still possible to find around the city. What is also interesting, Langloise bridge called also Van Gogh Bridge (Pont van Gogh), looking exactly the same like the one from artist's canvas is not the same that he really painted.

Montmajour (Big Mountain)
Just outside Arles Benedictine monks settled on the rocky island. Splendid monastery was built between 10th and 18th century. Now the monks are gone, abbey is in ruin and it is not even an island anymore but it's still impressive.

Next to the church there is territory of the former, unique cementery, where burial places were carved in the rocks.

It's a good place to admire Plaine de la Crau.
