Duranus is
a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in the Vesubie valley. The road to
get there sometimes takes your breath away but still it is worth going. Even in
August, when Nice bursts at the seams from the tourists, Duranus is quiet and
peaceful.
This site is
associated with the resistance of the “Barbets”, who were in opposition to the
integration of the County of Nice to the revolutionary France. According to the
legend they threw prisoners (French soldiers) from a nearby three-hundred-meters
rock to the Vesubie river. The place is now called “le saut des français” ̴ the French
jump…
If you have enough
time, you can go to visit the ruins of the arsenic mine (about 2 hours uphill).
